Julie B\u00e9vant is a member of the Geneva-based GAGSchola association, of which she was president and is now vice-president.<\/p>\n

She discovered HEMA in 2016 and practices mainly longsword, but has also tried her hand at wrestling, messer, saber and “savate”. The first weapon she discovered, however, was the cane (19th-20th centuries), which she had the opportunity to teach as part of the University of Geneva’s cultural activities.<\/p>\n

She has taken part in numerous events, from HEMAC to Dreynevent, and gave her first workshop at Marquisattack in 2025.<\/p>\n

Anouk Post-de Jong (NED)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Anouk started doing H.E.M.A. in 2012 after having several other martial arts. None quite stuck like having a go at friends with sharp historical objects such as swords and sabres.<\/p>\n

Starting out with longsword, as most people starting H.E.M.A. in the Netherlands do, she discovered the wondreous world of sabres. After some exploring she ended up taking a liking to British Military Swordmanship and as they say; the rest is history.<\/p>\n

Anouk has spread her love for Roworth and the spadroon far and wide from 2015 and onwards; bringing it back to the UK, to all across the ocean to the USA, and to her own native country the Netherlands. She is happy to return to Switzerland once again.<\/p>\n

Martin de Jong (NED)<\/h4>\n

Martin started practicing HEMA in 2015. Like the majority, he started with the longsword but was soon drawn to one-handed weapons. At one point, his girlfriend (now wife) Anouk suggested he pick up the klewang, given the fact that his grandfather, who was a Moluccan soldier in the KNIL (Royal Netherlands East Indies Army) from 1947 until 1950, used the klewang himself.<\/p>\n

Finding suitable simulators to safely practice this way of fencing in HEMA turned out to be the next challenge. The wooden training rifles from the former German Democratic Republic proved to be extremely suitable, and a safe alternative to the klewang was found in a custom project started together with Black Fencer (now a regular production model in their arsenal). To complete the mission of making klewang fencing accessible for everyone, Martin wrote together with Anouk Post-de Jong and Peter Frank Fighting with the Klewang<\/em> (Fallen Rook Publishing, 2022). This transcription includes a translation in English and adaptation for HEMA from the KNIL \u201cRegulation for the training in fighting with bladed weapons\u201d, so not only about fencing with a klewang but also riflefencing (bayonet).<\/p>\n

During the years, Martin gave lectures at various HEMA events, but also for groups like the HSSK Pro libertate, a student rifle corps association affiliated to the Dutch armed forces. Martin was also instructor and president of HEMA club HSSV Ludolph van Ceulen.<\/p>\n

Ju Garry-Combet (FR)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

My name is Ju Garry-Combet, I have been practicing HEMA for 14 years, I teach war fencing with bayonet, saber or spear, on foot or on horseback. Practicing HEMA gave me the will to learn more about this dark and not well known branch of History : battlefield fencing. My researches led me to take back History studies, first with a master, in which my thesis has been rewarded by a publication, then a PhD defended in November 2024, about war fencing in France between 1789 and 1918. I was also able to publish some books on those topics.<\/p>\n

I teach military HEMA of the 19th century in \u201cDe Taille et d\u2019Estoc\u201d in Dijon. I also give conferences and workshop since 2011. My specialties are saber (French, Swiss, Spanish and or many other), bayonet, mounted combat (I also teach equestrian sessions when I can in \u201cDe Taille et D\u2019Estoc\u201d) and onboard fight according to French and British sources.<\/p>\n

Jay Maxwell (UK)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Jay Maxwell has been practising as a martial artist in Historic European Martial Arts (HEMA) since 2004. He regularly teaches at high profile international events and in his competitive years was one of the top ranked HEMA fencers in the world.<\/p>\n

Starting his training in British systems of swordsmanship, he quickly came into contact with the Italian schools and was taken by their elegance. He has since worked extensively on interpreting the detailed systems of combat surviving in writing from the 15th\u201016th c. Italian City States and the Holy Roman Empire.<\/p>\n

Today he is one of the very few full\u2010time professional HEMA instructors in the world, running a network of schools across the city of London. These have been the subject of national and international media, and his students regularly compete at the highest competitive level. His focus is primarily on the methodology of teaching and ensuring that the next generation of martial artists surpass him in every way.<\/p>\n

Jay was inducted into the Martial Arts Hall of Fame in 2023, and was awarded the Freedom of the City of London in 2025. He is also a member of an 800 year old guild of swordmakers.<\/p>\n

Romain Meister (CH)<\/h4>\n

Romain Meister started HEMA close to 9 years ago. Since 2022 he took over the presidency of the Unil’AMHE club in Lausanne. He teaches weekly smallsword and saber classes, and also gives workshop on various 18th and 19th century fencing system.<\/p>\n

Outside of HEMA he is passionate about grappling, which he started to practice a couple of years ago. He is particularly interested in the evolution of submission wrestling, from its earlier form in 19th century Catch-as-Catch-can up until modern nogi BJJ.<\/p>\n

Emanuel Meyer (CH)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Emanuel Meyer started out in 2016 at Gladius and Codex with the longsword, but it was too heavy. So he switched to the rapier, but it was still too heavy for him. It was also too long and impractical.<\/p>\n

In the end, it was with the small sword and the staff that he found his weapons. And with Donald McBane and William Hope, he also found his sources. And when he’s not in Scotland, he’s teaching small swords at Artes Certaminis or working on a modernisation of Hope’s Compleat Fencing-Master, due for publication this year.<\/p>\n

Jerzy Miklaszewski (PL)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Jerzy Miklaszewski is a seasoned Historical European Martial Arts (HEMA) instructor with over 15 years of teaching experience.\u00a0 His journey in martial arts began over 30 years ago with Taekwon-Do ITF under Marek Lech, a pioneer in Poland. He later trained in Wing Chun Kung Fu and Japanese martial arts at the Bujutsu Kan school in Krak\u00f3w.<\/p>\n

Discovering HEMA marked a turning point, leading to tournament successes and the founding of Silkfencing, a school combining historical research with modern training techniques, focused on Polish saber fencing. In 2017, with Jakub Zabierowski, he co-founded Krakowska Szko\u0142a Fechtunku, Poland\u2019s first professional HEMA center, fostering European martial arts practice and research.<\/p>\n

For over a decade, Jerzy has produced high-quality training sabers, now used in many countries. He co-organized an exhibition on European and Polish saber traditions with the Jagiellonian University Museum, showcasing their cultural importance. Jerzy has led workshops in 23 countries, including the US, Germany, and Japan. In 2014, as part of the Polish Knight cadre, he placed second at the IMCF World Championships in Spain. Today, he focuses on producing training equipment and promoting HEMA globally.<\/p>\n

Michael Moritz (DE)<\/h4>\n

Michael Moritz was thrilled to start his fencing journey at the Gladiatories in Munich in 2010. He has been teaching there as an instructor since 2014. His role as a coach involves teaching advanced fencers the longsword, as well as various other historical weapons, including the dagger, polearms, especially the \u201cHalbe Stange\u201d and some langes messer.<\/p>\n

He also holds a fitness training qualification and is responsible for the athletics training. In his teachings, he places significant emphasis on body structure and dynamics, as well as the effective and meaningful replication of techniques in a combative context.<\/p>\n

Cyril “Kurso” Perrier (FR)<\/h4>\n

\"\"<\/p>\n

Cyril \u201cKurso\u201d Perrier began AMHE in 1999-2000, founding \u201cDe Taille et d’Estoc\u201d association with Fabrice Cognot (2003) and taking an interest in various armed and unarmed arts (he already had an intense practice of Shotokan Karate).<\/p>\n

In 2015, he founded the association \u201cLes Choses aux Poings\u201d, which focuses on the late 19th – early 20th century arts and instructs a form of urban self-defense based on the AMHEs of that era.<\/p>\n

In 2018, he discovered Antrim Bata under the instruction of Maxime Chouinard (Quebec) and added this practice to his list of achievements.<\/p>\n

Since then, he has been an instructor of this discipline within the Faction \u201cdu Vieux Monde\u201d, which brings together the various European groups studying bataireacht.<\/p>\n

Auri Poso (FIN)<\/h4>\n

Auri Poso started in Historical European Martial Arts in 2002 under Guy Windsor, and founded Gladiolus School of Arms in 2021. In between these dates there\u2019s been more life, work and children than HEMA, which Auri finds actually quite healthy \u2013 but is glad to be back in the world of blades. A Fiorist and a history geek, Auri loves the research aspect of HEMA and would quite happily spend the next 30 years going over Fiore\u2019s treatises with a magnifying glass in one hand and various weapons in the other.<\/p>\n

I am Maarten Van der Auwera, Instructor of Sumus Soldani<\/em> in Belgium. I have been doing HEMA for almost 10 years and have focused mainly on tournament fencing. I have participated in a lot of tournaments and have conquered several medals. I am also an experienced referee, judge and livestream commentator. I mainly train longsword based on the Liechtenauer tradition, but I also have some experience with sabre, sidesword and sword & buckler.<\/p>\n

Veronica Young (USA)<\/h4>\n

Veronica serves as one of the Assistant Instructors at the Atlanta Historical Fencing Academy (AHFA) in Atlanta, GA. They are currently ranked within the top 10 in the world for URG Longsword and within the top 1,000 in Open Longsword worldwide. Her primary weapon is Longsword, but also is proficient with Sword & Buckler and Spear\/Quarterstaff.<\/p>\n

She also founded and leads the resource group called ‘Arc’ at AHFA, for under-represented genders to promote good club culture and to provide a focused training environment. They have a focus on Sports Psychology and its unique interaction with HEMA. Veronica has been competing in HEMA since 2019. She has also taught workshops and classes at the IGX 2022, Mid-Continental HEMA Open 2022, King\u2019s Cup 2023, and AGO 2024.<\/p>\n
